Construction began in 1882 under Francisco de Paula del Villar, but when Antoni Gaudí assumed control in 1883, he transformed a neo-Gothic parish church into a living thesis on sacred geometry and natural form.
Gaudí devoted 43 years to the project, living on-site in his final months, and at his death in 1926 only the Nativity façade and one tower stood complete. Today, nine generations of architects have worked from his plaster models and drawings, and the basilica remains Barcelona's most scrutinized construction site, projected for completion in 2026—the centenary of Gaudí's passing.
The basilica's interior rewrites the rules of ecclesiastical space. Eighteen towers will eventually rise to represent the Twelve Apostles, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Christ—the central spire will reach 172.5 metres, deliberately one metre shorter than Montjuïc, Gaudí's gesture of deference to divine creation. Hyperboloid vaults and inclined columns mimic tree canopies, and the stained glass floods the nave with chromatic light that shifts throughout the day. UNESCO inscribed the site in 2005, citing its radical synthesis of Art Nouveau and Gothic revival.
